Election violence in Haiti cast a shadow over negotiations in Miami this week. The results of the country's troubled presidential election pit grandmother against pop star, throwing Haiti into an existential crisis. Meanwhile, Haitian pop-star-turned-presidential candidate Michel Martelly (also known as “Sweet Mickey”) was spotted at a Miami nightclub on Saturday night promoting his latest CD, “oui, nous pouvons.” (See performance here). When asked whether it was appropriate given the ongoing violence, he said that he was reaching out to the Haitian Diaspora, trying to get out the vote and building political support abroad.
